Unemployment Insurance Fraud

Unemployment Insurance Fraud

As many of you know there has been a spike in Fraudulent Unemployment Insurance Claims recently.

The New York Daily News reported:

"New York State has identified more than 425,000 fraudulent unemployment benefit claims during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Unfortunately we are no exception.

We are working with HR on this matter. Dept of Labor notifies HR of the claim then HR notifies the SSSA and you via transit email for verification.

It is essential for anyone who received this email to "Reply All" with a small statement immediately as this is Time Sensitive.

As an example: At no time did I apply for unemployment in 2020. SSN 0000

A typical email from HR and a typical response looks something like this:

This, in part, is an email from HR

The NYS Department of Labor (DOL) reported to the Transit Authority that an Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claim was filed using your name and Social Security Number on [Date Varies]. If you did not file an Unemployment claim, this may be a fraudulent claim. Please prepare a written statement (Reply All to email) and submit ASAP, indicating whether you filed this unemployment claim, and be sure to include the last four digits of your Social Security Number.  Upon receipt of your written statement, Human Resources will protest the fraudulent claim to the NYS DOL. Please see attached NYS Cyber Intelligence Bulletin for additional information. Your prompt reply is appreciated so we may respond to the DOL by the mandated deadline of [Date Varies].

This, in part, is a reply from HR after notification was made and a response was received with recommendations.

With respect to your fraudulent claim, we will protest it with the Department of Labor (DOL); I’ve attached the NYS Cyber Intelligence Bulletin regarding unemployment fraud. Additionally, you should notify the Credit Bureaus and the Federal Trade Commission including filing a police report, you’ll need the date on which the claim was filed and that was on [Date Varies].  However, if your local precinct requires verification that your SSN has been comprised, please follow Step 2 on the attached bulletin and produce the email confirmation that you’ve received from DOL.

If you have any questions or wish to verify the validity of any email concerning this you can call the Union Hall @ (718) 858-2113.
